How to Wash Duck Down (Jackets, Quilts) | Lyrebird Laundromat
Introduction
Duck down is light, warm, and insulating—but also delicate. If washed incorrectly, it can clump, flatten, or lose its loft. At Lyrebird Laundromat, our front-load washers and oversized dryers are perfect for giving down items the care they need.
Step 1: Check the Care Label
- If it says “Dry Clean Only”, avoid machine washing.
- If safe, proceed with a gentle cold wash only.
Step 2: Pre-Treat & Prepare
- Shake out dust and loose debris.
- Spot clean stains with mild detergent and cold water.
- Avoid bleach, fabric softeners, or hot water.
Step 3: Gentle Wash
- Use a front-loader (never a top-loader with agitators).
- Select a cold, gentle cycle.
- If bringing detergent, choose a down-safe formula.
- Add 2–3 clean tennis balls to help prevent clumping.
Step 4: Dry the Right Way
- Transfer to a large-capacity dryer.
- Select low heat (high heat damages feathers).
- Add tennis balls again for even drying.
- Pause halfway, fluff by hand, then continue.
- Expect 5–2 hours for full dryness.
- Always check for damp spots before storing to avoid mould.
Pro Tip
Never rush down drying—100% dryness is essential. Moisture left inside will cause odours and ruin the filling.
At Lyrebird Laundromat, our commercial Speed Queen dryers and spacious drums are designed for bulky items like doonas and jackets—leaving them clean, fresh, and fluffy.
